Know the book’s position before you buy it
This is a young-earth creationist book, and that is not incidental to it. Henry M. Morris, who founded the Institute for Creation Research and co-wrote The Genesis Flood, contributed to it and is himself one of the eleven men profiled. Walt Brown, another creation-science figure, is a second. George Mulfinger taught physics at Bob Jones University.
Called to Better does not take a side on the age of the earth. Six-day creation, old-earth readings, and “God made it and the method is open” are all held by serious Christians, and we are not going to rule on it. But you should know what you are ordering, and the old page gave no indication.
What it is
Short biographies of eleven scientists, each covering the man’s scientific work alongside evidence of his Christian faith. The list runs from Kepler and Robert Boyle through Faraday, Samuel Morse, Matthew Fontaine Maury, James Clerk Maxwell, and Lord Kelvin, to Howard Kelly, and then to Morris and Brown.
The first nine are uncontroversial: these are genuinely major figures whose faith is a matter of record, and the chapters on Faraday and Maxwell are worth the book. The last two are living-memory creation-science advocates rather than figures of comparable scientific standing, and placing them in the same list is an editorial argument rather than a neutral one. Read that as the book making a case, not as an oversight.
Who it suits
Good for a father reading with sons, or for a man who absorbed the idea that faith and science are opposed and has never examined it. The premise, that many of the people who built modern science were serious Christians, is simply true and worth knowing.
