Courageous Parenting: Raising Our Children to Be Salt & Light In Their Generation is a Christian parenting book credited to two authors, Barry Nichols and Jeremiah Johnson. It was independently published in 2025 (ISBN 979-8-218-71321-8). Our earlier review of this book named only Nichols, which was an error we are correcting here.
What the book covers
The publisher describes the book as drawing on more than forty years of parenting experience. The stated focus areas are building a godly home, disciplining with love rather than anger, guarding what reaches a child’s heart, and modeling a faith the children can actually see. The framing verse behind the subtitle is Matthew 5:13-16, where Jesus calls his followers salt and light.
The publisher’s own description also promises “prophetic insight” alongside biblical wisdom and real-life stories. That is worth knowing before you buy. Called to Better does not treat the active gifts of the Spirit as a problem, but if a prophetic frame is not what you are looking for in a parenting book, this one leans that way by its own account.

This is a self-published title. That is not a strike against it. Both authors are named and findable, and plenty of good books are published this way. It does mean there was no outside editorial process, and there is very little independent review coverage to weigh against the publisher’s description.
Who it is for
This is aimed at parents who already share its convictions and want encouragement plus a practical frame, not at someone looking for a research-backed parenting manual. Fathers who want to be more deliberate about faith conversations at home are the obvious audience. If you want an established name with a long publishing track record, there are better-known options in the same lane.
Where we land
Fair choice if the prophetic-charismatic framing suits you and you want a recent, plain-spoken book on raising kids with conviction. Look at the preview before buying, since the structural features are the part we could not confirm.
