Calling: God’s Blueprint for Your Life is by Dr. Richard S. Park, independently published in 2019 (ISBN 978-1-0824276-9-5).
Check the title before you order
Park has a book listed as The Blueprint: God’s Calling for Your Life. The title is the same words in a different order, and it appears to be a later edition of this material. Compare the two listings before buying so you do not end up with both.
Who wrote it
Richard S. Park is an assistant professor of theology and ethics at Vanguard University. He was previously a senior lecturer in theology at Biola University and an academic consultant for the John Templeton Foundation.
That is a genuine academic background, and it shows in the book’s main strength: it distinguishes between different kinds of calling rather than collapsing them into one. Most books on this subject treat “calling” as a single thing, usually a job you are supposed to find. Park separates the general call every Christian shares from the particular work a given person is suited to, which is the distinction that actually resolves most of the anxiety around the topic.
The format
It is short and uses acronyms as memory devices. Whether that helps or grates is a matter of taste; readers who dislike that device will find it intrusive, and it is used throughout rather than occasionally.
This is self-published despite the author’s academic post, so expect a book rather than a polished production, and there is limited independent review coverage.
What we removed
The old page carried a “Reader Highlights” section with three quotations we could not verify, and framed the book with a title about leading like a warrior that has nothing to do with its subject. Both are gone.
Where we land
A useful short read for a man stuck on the question of what he is supposed to be doing with his life, mostly because Park takes apart the question before answering it. Check which of the two titles you are ordering.
