Praying Like Monks, Living Like Fools Bible Study Guide plus Streaming Video is a five-session group study on prayer led by pastor Tyler Staton, published by Zondervan.
Read this before you buy: you are buying the workbook, not the book
Two things about this listing that matter more than anything in the study itself.
First, this is the study guide. The actual book is Praying Like Monks, Living Like Fools: An Invitation to the Wonder and Mystery of Prayer, a separate purchase with a foreword by Tim Mackie of the Bible Project. The study guide is a workbook of notes, questions, and between-session exercises built to accompany the videos. If you wanted Staton’s prose, you want the other one.
Second, the streaming video access expires. The code included with this guide is dated to stop working after 31 December 2029. That is a real limitation on something sold as “plus Streaming Video,” and no review we found mentions it. If you are buying for a church library or planning to run this study repeatedly for years, the DVD edition exists as a separate product and does not expire. Buy accordingly.
What the five sessions cover
Staton takes the Lord’s Prayer apart into four practices and builds the study around them, opening with the fact that Christ is praying for you right now. The sessions and their video runtimes:
- The Intercession of Christ (18:00)
- Our Father In Heaven, on adoration (19:30)
- Search Me and Know Me, on confession (20:00)
- Our Daily Bread, on petition (17:30)
- On Earth as It Is in Heaven, on intercession (22:00)
Roughly ninety-seven minutes of video across five weeks. The guide includes a section on leading the group, space for video notes, and personal study between meetings.
Starting with Christ’s intercession rather than with your technique is the smartest structural decision in the study. Most material on prayer starts by telling you to pray more, which lands on a struggling man as one more failure. Staton starts by pointing out that someone is already praying for you by name, and builds from there.
What we cut from this page
The old version quoted two customer reviews, one attributed to a named individual. Neither could be verified and both are gone. The line about Jesus interceding for us by name is genuinely the study’s own framing and stays.
Who it fits
A small group willing to commit five weeks and to actually watch the videos together. It works for a men’s group, though nothing about it is specifically aimed at men, and it works equally well for a mixed group. There is a real difference between a study you read alone and one built around watching and then talking, and this is firmly the second kind.
Skip it if you want to read rather than watch, if you cannot get a group together, or if you are buying for long-term repeat use and the 2029 expiry is a problem. In the first case, buy the book instead.
