Who Oswald J. Smith was
Smith (1889 to 1986) founded The Peoples Church in Toronto and spent his life pressing the church on world missions. He wrote dozens of books and hymns. His reputation rests mainly on missions advocacy, and that concern runs underneath this book even when it is not the stated subject.
What the book actually argues
The premise is narrow and old-fashioned: God uses people who are surrendered, clean, and available, and the obstacle is almost never ability. Smith writes about unconfessed sin, about the willingness to be inconvenienced, and about prayer as work rather than mood. He is direct to the point of bluntness, and he does not soften the demand.
The style is turn-of-the-century revivalist preaching in print. Some readers find that bracing. Others find it heavy, because the book is more concerned with what is wrong with you than with encouragement. Go in expecting a challenge, not a comfort.
