Friendship with God: Discover God’s Relational Presence and Receive Peace, Identity, and Purpose for Your Life is by Jamie Moore, published by Doxazo in February 2021.
What it is about, and what it is not
Our old review filed this under brotherhood and framed it as a book about male friendship. That was wrong. The friendship in the title is with God, not with other men. If you came looking for a book on building male friendships, this is not it.
Moore’s argument is that most Christians relate to God as a duty or a doctrine rather than as someone they know, and that the gap is closable. The book works through what he presents as the practical side of that: hearing from God, resting in an identity that is settled rather than performed, and living without the low-grade fear that runs underneath a lot of religious effort.
Know the tradition it comes from
This is a charismatic book and it does not hide it. The publisher’s description promises that you will hear God speak to you every day and see the supernatural power of God flow through you to others. Called to Better does not treat the ongoing gifts of the Spirit as a problem, and we do not flag a book for assuming they are active. But readers come to us from a range of backgrounds, and this book’s expectations about hearing God’s voice are more specific than many readers will be used to.
If that framing fits you, the book will land. If you hold a cessationist position, or you are simply cautious about material that promises daily direct guidance, you will spend a lot of the book arguing with it. Better to know that before you buy than after.
What we could not verify
Independent review coverage of this title is thin. We could not verify the author’s ministry background beyond the publisher’s own materials, and we could not confirm the page count or whether the book includes study questions. Our previous review made claims about reader reactions and community discussion that were invented, and those are gone.
Where we land
A fair pick if you are inside the charismatic stream and the “God feels distant” problem is the one you actually have. Look elsewhere if you want either a book on friendship between men or a more restrained treatment of guidance.
