Men of Courage: God’s Call to Move Beyond the Silence of Adam is by Larry Crabb, Don Michael Hudson, and Al Andrews, published by Zondervan (ISBN 978-0-310-33692-1). Our old page named none of the three authors in its title and referred to a different title in its search description, which is worth explaining.
It is the same book as The Silence of Adam
Men of Courage is the updated and expanded edition of The Silence of Adam: Becoming Men of Courage in a World of Chaos. If that title is already on your shelf, you largely own this. The expansion is real, so it is not a pure retitle, but you would be buying a revision rather than a new book.
This is now the third retitled edition we have found in this batch alone. It is worth checking any leadership or manhood title against your existing shelf before ordering.
What it argues
The premise comes from Genesis 3. Adam was standing there. The text says he was with her, and he said nothing. Crabb’s argument is that this silence, not aggression, is the characteristic male failure: withdrawal at the moment when speaking would cost something.
From there the book works on why men go quiet, in marriages, with children, in conflict, and what it takes to speak into a situation you cannot control or fix. Crabb was a psychologist by training and it shows in the best way; the book is more interested in what is actually happening inside a man than in prescribing behavior.
Who wrote it
Larry Crabb (1944 to 2021) was a psychologist and one of the more influential Christian counselors of his generation, known for arguing that the church, not the clinic, is where most healing should happen. Don Michael Hudson is a biblical scholar and Al Andrews a counselor, and the three voices are genuinely distinguishable in the text.
What we removed
The old review quoted the book saying “the design of every man is to talk and be talked to” and “the silence of Adam is the beginning of every man’s failure.” Those paraphrase the argument fairly, but we could not verify them as direct quotations, so we have described the argument instead of quoting it. The invented “Reviewer Reflections” section and a leaked “Final CTA Block” heading are also gone.
Where we land
One of the better books on this shelf, and older and deeper than most of what is being published now. Recommended, with the caveat about the earlier title.
