Our old page had three different book names on it: the title said “Empowering Christian Men in Marriage and Family Leadership,” the search description said Marriage: Mission Critical, and a heading inside referred to “Roots to Fruits.” Only the last was close.
The book is Marriage from Roots to Fruits: Understanding God’s Design for Growing in the Good Soil by Matt Pavlik (paperback ISBN 978-0-9863831-0-6; the listing we link is the Kindle edition). Johnnie Alexander and Will Alejandro are also credited on the listing.
Who wrote it, and why it matters here
Matt Pavlik is a licensed professional clinical counselor who has worked with individuals and couples for over twenty years at his practice, New Reflections Counseling. He holds a master’s in clinical pastoral counseling from Ashland Theological Seminary and, unusually, a master’s in computer science from the University of Illinois.
The clinical background shows. This is written by someone who sits with couples in trouble for a living, and the book is aimed squarely at marriages that are already hard rather than at newlyweds looking to optimize.
What it is
The organizing image is agricultural: roots produce fruit, so what shows up in a marriage traces back to something underneath it. Pavlik works down to those roots rather than handing out communication techniques. It includes study material, so it can be worked through by a couple together rather than read alone.
The honest framing is that this is a book for a marriage under strain. If yours is fine and you want maintenance reading, there are lighter options. If failure is a live possibility, this is the more useful kind of book.
A word on how we treat this
Called to Better holds that men and women have different but equal roles and we do not define those roles past what Scripture plainly states, so we are not going to endorse any book’s account of who defers to whom in a disagreement. And if conflict in your marriage has become frightening rather than painful, no book is the right tool. Talk to someone in person.
What we removed
The previous review carried a fabricated “Team Reflections” section. It is gone, along with the two wrong book names.
Where we land
A serious, counselor-written book for a marriage that needs real work. Recommended for that situation, and confirm you are ordering the format you want.
