Adventuring Through the Bible: Old Testament is by Ray C. Stedman.
Two edition facts that matter
First, Ray Stedman died in 1992. This material comes out of his long pastorate at Peninsula Bible Church in Palo Alto, where he preached through the entire Bible book by book. Anything presented as a new or updated edition was assembled by a publisher after his death, not revised by him.
Second, and this is the practical one: the original was a single volume covering the entire Bible, Adventuring Through the Bible: A Comprehensive Guide to the Entire Bible. It has since been split into two, an Old Testament volume and a New Testament volume, published by Discovery House. This listing is the Old Testament half.
So if you want Stedman on the whole Bible, buying this gets you part of it. Decide deliberately: the comprehensive single volume still exists, and buying the two halves separately usually costs more than buying the one book.
What it does
It is a book-by-book survey. Stedman takes each book of the Old Testament in turn and does the thing most people never get help with: explains what the book is for, how it fits, and where it points. Not verse-by-verse commentary, and not devotional either. It sits in the useful gap between the two.
His governing idea is that the Old Testament is one story rather than an anthology, and that every part of it is going somewhere. If you have read Leviticus or the minor prophets and come away with no idea why they are in there, this is the kind of book that fixes that.
The style
Stedman preached in the 1960s through the 1980s and it reads that way: plain, warm, a bit dated in its illustrations, and completely free of jargon. Some readers find that refreshing after modern study Bibles. Others will notice it is decades old and that scholarship has moved in places.
What we removed
Our previous review quoted a reader saying “Ray’s explanations bring clarity to difficult concepts” under a heading called Real Reviews, which was then empty. We could not verify that quote. It also framed the book as a men’s leadership resource, which it is not; it is a Bible survey for anyone. Both are fixed.
Where we land
A good, cheap, plain-spoken way into the Old Testament as a whole, especially for a man who has tried to read it straight through and stalled somewhere in the middle. Check whether you want this half or the complete single volume before you order.
