MasterLife Together: A Discipleship Experience for Small Groups

MasterLife Together updates Avery Willis’s original MasterLife curriculum, one of the most widely used discipleship studies in Baptist small groups since the 1980s. This edition was written by his grandson Matt Willis and Matt’s wife Allison, who have led groups through the original material themselves and adapted it for a new generation without changing what made it work.

What’s Actually In It

The book runs twelve sessions, each built around personal study you do on your own during the week, about fifteen to twenty minutes a day, plus a group discussion. Every week includes a Scripture memory verse. Topics move through the core disciplines the original Willis material is known for: prayer, time in the Word, witnessing, and personal accountability. There is a leader guide and tips for running the group built in, plus an appendix with five additional optional sessions.

The Biblical Angle

The study leans on Proverbs 27:17, “as iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another,” as its organizing idea: growth happens in relationship, not in isolation. The daily exercises push toward honesty about where you actually are spiritually, which only works if the group has enough trust for people to say it out loud.

Who It’s For

Best suited to a men’s group willing to commit to all twelve weeks and the daily homework in between. It is not a light, drop-in study. Groups that have already built some trust will get the most out of the vulnerability it asks for.

Our Take

Faithful to the original material and well organized for group use. If your group wants a structured, multi-month commitment rather than a single-session study, this is a strong option.
