Charles F. Stanley’s Every Day in His Presence is a 365-day devotional from Thomas Nelson. It is one of the more widely used devotionals of the last decade, and it does what it says without any complication.
The format
Each of the 365 entries pairs a Scripture passage with a short reflection, a brief prayer, and a closing line under the heading “In His Presence” that gives you one thought to carry out of the reading. Entries are short. The whole thing is designed to take a few minutes.
Stanley’s voice here is what it was on the radio for fifty years: calm, plain, pastoral, unhurried. He is not trying to startle you. If you have been away from a regular time in Scripture and want something with low friction to restart the habit, this format is built for exactly that.
It is not a men’s devotional
The earlier version of this page presented this as a devotional for Christian men, and Amazon’s listing does not describe it that way. It is a general-audience daily devotional. Nothing in it is aimed at men specifically, and there is no men’s-issues thread running through it. That does not make it a bad choice for a man. It just means you should buy it for what it is, and if you want a devotional that deals with work, marriage, lust, anger, and provision head-on, you want a different book.
One claim we removed
The earlier version said the book includes reflection questions alongside the daily Scriptures. The publisher’s own description of the format lists Scripture, application, a short prayer, and the “In His Presence” takeaway. We could not confirm any reflection questions and have removed the claim rather than repeat it.
About the author
Stanley founded In Touch Ministries and served First Baptist Church of Atlanta for fifty years as senior pastor, moving to pastor emeritus in 2020. He wrote more than seventy books. He died in April 2023 at 90. If you have never read him, this devotional is a reasonable place to meet his writing, because the daily format shows his instincts clearly.
Bottom line
A dependable, gentle year-long devotional for anyone, men included, who wants a short daily anchor. Not a men’s book. Not demanding. Good at what it sets out to do.
