Becoming Mature by Matik Nicholls: A Review

Becoming Mature: A Practical Guide for Disciples of Jesus is by Matik Nicholls with Dr. C.B. Peter Morgan, released in April 2025. Our old page credited Nicholls alone; Morgan is on the book.

Why the author’s history matters here

Nicholls was a church leader living in secret sin. He walked away from the faith entirely, and later came back after what he describes as an encounter with God’s love. He now works as a discipleship coach and writes Bible plans.

That is the book’s credential and its risk. The credential: a man who has been on the other side of a collapse writes about maturity differently from someone who has only ever climbed. He knows what it is to be respected on Sunday and hollow the rest of the week, which is the exact condition a lot of men reading this are in and will not say.

The risk, and we will name it: a testimony this dramatic can carry a book past the point where its argument holds. Read it for the honesty rather than for a system.

What it covers

Nicholls works through stages of growth, taking in identity, intimacy with God, wholeness, dependence, resilience, and purpose. It is a practical guide rather than a theological treatment, aimed at the ordinary problem of a Christian who has been converted for years and is not obviously different.

The framing of maturity as stages is useful for a man who assumes he is failing because he has not arrived. It is less useful if you take the stages as a checklist, and the book is better where it is describing than where it is prescribing.

What we could and could not verify

The book is self-published, though with a named co-author and an author who has a public presence and other work. There is little independent review coverage, so we cannot point you to a second opinion. Several editions exist under different ISBNs, in Kindle, paperback and hardcover.

What we removed

An invented “Reviewer Reflections” section, and a title about overcoming apathy that was not the book’s.

Where we land

Worth a look for a man who has been a Christian long enough to be tired of not changing, especially one who has something he has not told anyone. Go in knowing it is one man’s account rather than an established work.
