The COMMITMENTS of a Jesus Follower: Practical Christian Living and Discipleship is by Stephen H. Berkey, published by Get Wisdom Publishing in March 2025, 186 pages. It is part of his Jesus Follower Bible Study Series.
What it is
Ten lessons, built as a Bible study rather than a book to read straight through. The topics run through foundation, surrender, lordship, bearing fruit, rejecting worldly values, and perseverance. It is written for a group working through it week by week, with the expectation that people are opening their Bibles rather than just reading Berkey.
Ten lessons across 186 pages is a sane ratio. That is worth saying because this corner of the market is full of books selling a 31-day program in 40 pages, and this is not one of them.
Who wrote it
Stephen Berkey came to faith in 1994 and earned a Certificate of Biblical Studies at the Indianapolis campus of Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. He has been an entrepreneur and a small-group Bible study leader for about twenty-five years, writing his own studies for his groups along the way. He founded Get Wisdom Publishing in 2019 and attends The Church at Station Hill in Spring Hill, Tennessee, a campus of Brentwood Baptist.
He is a layman who has led groups for a long time, not a seminary-trained pastor or scholar. That is neither a strike nor a selling point on its own, but you should know it, because the studies read like what they are: material written by an experienced group leader for other group leaders.
Get Wisdom Publishing is his own imprint, so this is effectively self-published. The series is coherent and has been building for years, which is a different thing from a batch of unrelated titles dumped out in one quarter.
Two practical notes
It is part of a series, and the series is now fairly long. There is no obvious required order, but if you are picking one to start a group on, look at the full list before committing rather than starting wherever the search results landed you.
The audiobook edition is narrated by Amazon’s Virtual Voice, meaning synthetic text-to-speech rather than a human reader. Sample it before buying if you plan to listen.
What we removed
The old review answered its own invented FAQ with claims about structured discussions and reflective questions that we could not verify. Those are gone.
Where we land
A reasonable, unglamorous option for a small group that wants ten weeks of Scripture-driven material and does not need a name-brand author. Check the rest of the series before you pick this one specifically.
