Discipleship Explored is an eight-session course by Barry Cooper, published by The Good Book Company. Our old page never named him. It also described the wrong product.
This is the Leader’s Handbook, and on its own it will not run the course
Our previous review described this listing as being for people who have recently decided to follow Christ. That is the description of the course, and of the participant’s Handbook. This ISBN is the Leader’s Handbook: training material, advice on running the sessions, and answers to all the course questions.
If you are planning to lead a group, here is what you actually need to budget for:
- The Leader’s Handbook, this listing, one copy for you.
- The Handbook, a separate product, one per participant.
- The video content, sold as the Leader’s Kit or the digital Kit. The sessions are built around it.
Buying this book alone leaves you holding the answers to questions you have no way to present. That is the single most useful thing this page can tell you, and the old version of it told you the opposite.
What the course actually is
Eight sessions working through Paul’s letter to the Philippians. It is the follow-on to Christianity Explored, aimed at people who have made a start and want to know what the Christian life actually involves.
Working through one book of the Bible rather than a topic list is the strength here. The group ends up reading Philippians properly instead of skimming proof texts arranged by theme, and Philippians is a good choice for it: Paul writing about joy and contentment from prison is hard to sentimentalize.
Who it suits
Good for a men’s group where somebody is willing to prepare and lead. The material assumes a leader who has done the reading, which is a feature rather than a flaw, but it does mean this is not a book you hand around a circle.
What we removed
An invented “Reviewer Reflections” section and an FAQ built around a product description that did not match the product.
