Essential Elements is the first book in Vince Miller’s Forged: Godly Men series, published by NavPress. It is a five-lesson Bible study, not a book you read straight through, and it comes with an intro video.
Miller has written more than twenty books and founded Resolute, a men’s ministry platform that hosts a large library of men’s Bible study material. This is his entry point into that library.
The question it is built around
The whole study hangs on one question: what makes a man? Miller’s answer is worked out across five lessons covering what Jesus’ life shows about masculinity, why authentic manhood produces purpose and joy, why real strength never comes from popular opinion, how to read God’s design in a confusing culture, and why the road from sin to salvation is about Jesus rather than about you.
That last one is the reason the study is better than most in this category. A great deal of men’s material is functionally about self-improvement with verses attached. Miller ends by pointing away from the reader. For a genre that regularly turns into a pep talk, that is the right instinct.
Format, and what that means for you
Five lessons is short. That is deliberate. It is designed for a small group that wants something it can actually finish, or for a man working alone who needs a starting point rather than a commitment.
Because it is short, it is also an introduction. You will not get depth on any single topic. If your group has been meeting for years and reading substantial material, this will feel thin. If your group keeps starting twelve-week studies and abandoning them in week four, five lessons with a video is exactly the right size.

Miller builds his answer around Jesus rather than around a list of male traits, which keeps him closer to that line than much of this genre manages. Where he describes God’s design for men, weigh it against the text yourself rather than accepting it because the book is confident.
Honest note
The previous version of this review claimed each chapter contains reflection questions, Scripture tie-ins, and “opportunities for real-life testimonies,” and described a CalledToBetter review team discussing it. There was no team, and I could not verify the specific chapter features. It is a Bible study, so questions are likely, but check the preview before ordering for a group.
Who should use it
A men’s group that needs a short, finishable study with a video component. A man new to structured Bible study who wants a starting point. Churches building a men’s ministry from nothing.
Skip it if you want depth, or if your group is already working through substantial material.
